I am such a brunch person – not that I ever really go out for it – but the brunch scene is a lot more prominent in Essex and London and it’s another thing I miss. I went to The Greedy Italian last Saturday with my friends Rebecca and Vanessa and it was so good, I booked a table for lunch the following day. Everyone on the estate raves about it and I totally get why. We had the bottomless brunch which is only available on a Saturday, with two sittings at 12:30pm and 2:30pm – we were at the former. The menu is set and priced at £28 for two courses and two hours of unlimited prosecco or Peroni – of course, we all opted for fizz.

After a lot of deliberation, we all decided we’d have starters and mains and truth be told, I’d recommend doing that because the desserts on the a la carte menu are better than the ones listed on the brunch set menu. Vanessa and I had the honey & thyme baby chorizo, which was beautiful. The sausages had been roasted nicely, with the most gorgeous glaze – and they weren’t overly oily either. Rebecca chose the bruschetta, which I can tell you was good, because I chose it on the Sunday, when we met up with Vicky and Callum. I love bruschetta and this was so fresh with tomato and basil; while the sourdough was surprisingly light. Three pieces for one person as a starter was more than enough – so definitely made for sharing.

To follow, Rebecca and I had the minute steak (medium-rare, as it comes for me, and well-done for Rebecca). It came served with fries and a little dressed rocket salad. The steak was well-cooked, in my opinion, and virtually fat-free. I thought there were too many fries, but Rebecca who was on cheat day (she gets married next month, so is being a bit stricter) managed to demolish the lot! Vanessa ordered the gammon ribeye, which looked tasty. I often find gammon a bit salty, so tend to avoid it – but I can’t help but admit that I got food envy. Her meal came served with fries and an accompanying pot of onion chutney.

We asked to have a look at the dessert menu, but decided to stay for a cocktail instead. Despite going over our two hour slot, the restaurant didn’t need our table back so were happy for us to stay – it just meant the fizz would be stopped. We ordered a round of pornstar martinis, which were good, but I wish I’d chosen an espresso martini instead... I’d been up since half 6 and was lagging a bit!

As is often the case with family-run independents, the service was great and nothing was too much trouble (even cremating Rebecca’s steak!). After eating, I knew I wanted to visit again the following day, so after finding out a table would be available for us, the staff were great in answering all my questions (highchair, kids menu etc). Our prosecco flutes were constantly being topped up, without us needing to ask for more and always filled to the top too. Obviously, the fact that I returned so soon, speaks volumes – but there is no doubt we will go back again... maybe one day, we might get a date night again!
